By Susan Lowe

Using herbal treatments for common conditions has become more popular in recent years as knowledge about alternative medicines has increased among the general public. Using herbs like chamomile for thrush is preferred by many to using products which a manufactured from chemicals. Thrush is a fungal infection which is caused by a yeast called candida.

When the immune system receives a shock though, the body can often not cope with the yeast's presence. This is where the presence of candida will often cause thrush to develop, with it tending to spring up in the mouth or the genitals, though other areas can be prone to it as well. The nipples of breastfeeding mothers, for example, often become infected with thrush.

Thrush causes the skin to become sore and itchy, with redness and inflammation also occurring. Treating the condition can be problematic, with restoring the immune system's balance often difficult. Chamomile is one of a number of herbal substances which can be used to alleviate the symptoms of the condition.

Humans have used extracts from this herb for medicinal purposes for many thousands of years, for a number of different conditions. For that reason, it can be a useful part of a family medicine chest. Two main varieties of the plant exist which are used medicinally, Roman and German, though both have similar effects.

The herb enjoys a reputation as an effective mild sedative, making it a popular ingredient in many people's choice of night time drink. It is often brewed into a tea, and also is reported as having beneficial effects on the digestive system. It works as an agent to prevent an excess of candida in the system.

Chamomile is also sometimes used as an ingredient in slaves or lotions for the skin. However, as the herb is a member of the ragweed family, people who are probe to allergies to that type of plant should not use it at all. Anyone who is not sure of an allergy, but uses a product and experiences any type of reaction should discontinue using it.

Using chamomile for thrush is often an effective treatment. Herbal and alternative therapies can have different effects on different people though, and safety should always be of prime concern to anyone using any kind of this type of medicine. A professional opinion should always be sought when in any kind of doubt.
