It occurs when muscles in the body contract strongly, causing immense pain that lasts for a few minutes. The pain can often be eradicated by massaging the affected muscles.

Professional sports are heavily characterized by injury, which makes many teams to associate closely with medical communities. Many teams also have team physicians. The subspecialty of the medicine profession that specializes in studying and researching injury in games in order to prevent or reduce severity is called Sports Medicine. Advancements in technology are causing this field to evolve rapidly.

Several ways exist for combating injury in games. Prevention is often associated with numerous benefits that include reduced medical costs, better performance, healthier athletes, and longer duration of participation. As such, teams, coaches, individual athletes, and team trainers are urged to take sport injury prevention programs seriously.

Three different categories of sport injury prevention have been formulated, that is, secondary, primary, and tertiary. The primary category is concerned with avoiding injuries in the first place. The secondary category deals with obtaining diagnosis and treatment the soonest after an injury has occurred. Finally, tertiary prevention deals with rehabilitation after traumatic injury.
